THE ROLE
At Thrive Market, our Product Engineering team collaborates closely with Product Managers and Feature teams to craft innovative solutions that elevate our e-commerce grocery experience. This team is pivotal in shaping the customer journey, from building intuitive cart and checkout experiences to optimizing our Autoship feature, akin to Amazon's Subscribe & Save.
We are seeking a Staff Engineer to own a pod in our product engineering organization. In this role, you'll work with talented engineers to create impactful product features that delight our members and drive revenue. Your work will heavily influence how our customers shop, save, and return to Thrive Market, making grocery shopping seamless and rewarding.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop REST and JSON API services that enable new customer experiences
- Decompose existing services into scalable microservices where needed
- Build services that scale horizontally and provide low uniform latency as demand increases, leveraging the right tools (languages, databases, serverless, distributed streaming, etc)
- Working with Golang, Python, PHP, Java, AWS, Kafka
- Test-driven development from the get-go, to protect customer experience and build speed and reliability into the development process
- Incorporate meaningful metrics into new services and functionality you build and evangelize them
- Work with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot issues and restore function
- Work closely with the product team and innovate game-changing ideas for the CustomerCreate discussions around architecture and code design choices where appropriate
- Able to enforce best practices and process enforcement
- Level up the team by strategically planning & assigning tasks, challenging them to raise the bar
- Own the SLA(s) around APIs owned by their pod, know what’s in class, and strive with the team to achieve by raising the bar
QUALIFICATIONS
- 7+ years developing end-to-end high-traffic responsive cross-platform sites
- Working knowledge of Linux, Relational & NoSQL databases, serverless
- Understand tradeoffs between architecture choices, and various database technologies i.e. Relational Vs Document Vs Wide Column
- Working knowledge with different AWS services - Lambda, S3, cloudwatch, etc.
- Experience in building n-tier applications that can support millions of transactions per day
- Shipped multiple high-customer impact use cases through simple and effective solutions, in a highly trafficked customer-facing product
- Understand scaling and performance in a microservice architecture
- Experience using version control such as GitAble to prioritize Customer, Team, and Business ahead of everything else consistently
- Good working knowledge of various AWS services such as lambda, s3, Cloudwatch, etc.
- Experience with observability and monitoring tools like New Relic effectively to maintain SLA, Apdex, and error rate in check

JOB INFORMATION:
- Compensation Description - The base salary range for this position is $190,000 - $225,000/Per Year.
- Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on several factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and geographic location.

- Recruiter Screen
- Introductory conversation to learn more about your background, motivations, and alignment with our mission.
- Technical Screen – Hands-On Coding
- A real-world, backend-focused coding exercise. You’ll build a function (e.g., related to a shopping cart), add logic, and apply business rules. It’s not LeetCode-style — this reflects how we build systems in production.
- You can use any programming language you prefer.
- We support both collaborative coding tools and IDE screen sharing — let us know your preference.
- Full Interview Loop
- This includes five sessions designed to evaluate both technical ability and leadership traits.
- Engineering Manager Screen (Ownership & Impact)
- Dive into past work, how you’ve driven impact, taken ownership, and contributed beyond code.
- System Design or Second Technical Screen
- Depending on earlier outcomes, we’ll either explore your systems thinking or go deeper into technical implementation.
- Director Screen (Strategic Thinking)
- A higher-level conversation assessing your ability to align engineering efforts with business goals and navigate ambiguity.
- Cross-Functional Screen (Collaboration)
- A session with a Product partner — we’re looking for collaborative instincts, communication clarity, and execution.
- Executive Interview
- A final conversation focused on long-term team fit, growth potential, and leveling calibration.
