About Roon

Millions of people turn to search engines and social media for medical information, but these platforms can be overwhelming and filled with misinformation. That's why Roon was created. Our interdisciplinary team, comprising of doctors, patients, caregivers, public health experts, designers, engineers, and content creators, has come together to reimagine how people access health information, with trust and expert curation at the forefront.
Today, Roon is a video-based medical Q&A platform, providing trusted answers to health questions. Thousands of experts from top medical institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, Yale, UCSF, Cornell, UPenn, Duke, and Columbia have contributed content and are sharing Roon with their patients.
Our ambition is to become the doctor in your pocket for all of health, blending world-class expertise with AI-driven assistance and guidance. And we’re just getting started

Role Description

Work with our CTO and engineering lead on overall application architecture. We use PostgreSQL, Python (Django Rest Framework), and the Google Cloud Platform (specifically, Google Cloud Run) to bring our application to life. So far, we’ve built a search engine and an AI agent within a deeply empathetic app that “understands” what our caregivers and patients are going through. You’re going to help us scale that, and make it even better. We’re also building tools for medical professionals to answer commonly asked questions.

Traits We Admire

We love people who are:
Insatiably Curious
You love to learn. You’re an information sponge, and have a lifelong curiosity about many things, particularly health care and the intersection of health and technology.
Compassionately First-Principled
You dig beneath the surface, setting aside trendy thinking to arrive at insights and perspectives that reflect an appreciation for life’s complexities.
Genuinely Empathetic
You have genuine interest and appreciation for everyone’s unique journey. You believe in the transformative impact of care on people’s lives.
Joyfully Crafting
You take deep pride in your work and are always challenging yourself to refine and hone what you do best. You bring joy and a pursuit of excellence to everything you undertake.

What You’ll Do

What we’re looking for:

Strong coding skills. You'll be a lead engineer on our team. You get that there’s something beautiful about clean readable code. You know exactly when to *args and when to **kwargs when defining new constructs; a good with makes you smile; you’ll yield when iterators bubble over. We use Python in case you were wondering, but if you’re less familiar, you’ll just pick it up.
Experience with the Django framework. We use models and views on top of PostgresQL, an architecture you’ve seen before.
Deep knowledge of a cloud platform and all the tools that come out of the box (so 5+ years of Google Cloud Platform or AWS experience is what we’re looking for).
Some experience with Docker or Kubernetes. We use container-based workflows in our system, and we intend to evolve these over time. If you’re DevOps adept, we want to hear form you!
A deep understanding of “API-led” or “service oriented” architectures, using a JSON + REST design. Useful work here would be using Flask + Python to design APIs, or the Django Rest Framework.
Comfort and experience (5+ years worth) with data stuff: SQL solutions (Postgres interfaces), and Bigtable, or Hadoop/Hive.
Deep knowledge of application security best practices.
Product and design sense. We are building for a population navigating difficult conditions, so ensuring that our product is intuitive, accessible, and empathetic every step of the way is imperative. Engineers work closely with product and design - collaborating, ideating and even challenging the team if something doesn’t fall in line with our patient & caregiver first approach.

What Will Working for Roon Be Like?

You'll receive competitive and transparent pay and equity. And if you happen to live in NYC or SF, where the cost of living is generally higher, we'll make pay adjustments accordingly. Did we mention you’ll be working with a neurosurgeon on work that matters from wherever you’d like to be working from? You can come and visit New York City, where we're based, whenever you want.
