About Us

LuminosAI is the embedded oversight layer that lets engineering and product teams ship AI fast - agents, generative AI, the works - without stalling for legal review. Our customers call us their "AI babysitter," the "legal AI within their AI." We're a team of company-builders and former Fortune 500 AI governance leads building the next generation of legal and risk infrastructure for a world moving faster than the law can keep up with.

Position Overview

LuminosAI is seeking a Director of Legal Engineering to lead our Legal Engineering team and own the successful delivery of our work with customers.

This is first and foremost a customer leadership role. You will serve as a senior, trusted partner to our customers, take responsibility for their day-to-day needs, and ensure that every engagement produces meaningful results. You will work closely with customer legal, privacy, compliance, risk, data science, and engineering teams to understand their requirements, design effective governance and evaluation programs, and guide them from initial onboarding through ongoing production use.

You will also lead a multidisciplinary team of lawyers and data scientists responsible for translating legal, regulatory, and risk requirements into technical evaluations of AI systems. You will set priorities, oversee the quality of the team’s work, develop repeatable delivery processes, and help team members operate effectively across legal, technical, and customer-facing responsibilities.

The ideal candidate combines excellent customer judgment with experience in legal, privacy, compliance, risk, AI governance, or data science. A JD is preferred but not required. We are equally interested in experienced professionals who have built their careers in privacy, risk, compliance, responsible AI, or related fields and can work fluently across legal and technical teams.

What You’ll Do

Own Customer Relationships and Outcomes

  • Own a portfolio of enterprise customer accounts and take responsibility for their day-to-day experience, needs, and success.
  • Serve as the senior point of contact for customer legal, compliance, privacy, risk, AI governance, data science, and engineering teams.
  • Ensure customers receive clear deliverables, reliable communication, and measurable value from the LuminosAI platform.
  • Identify opportunities to expand customer relationships based on genuine business and governance needs.
  • Bring customer feedback into product, engineering, data science, and company strategy.

Lead the Legal Engineering Team

  • Lead, manage, and develop a multidisciplinary team of lawyers, legal engineers, and data scientists.
  • Set priorities across customer engagements, product development, regulatory research, and evaluation design.
  • Build repeatable processes, templates, and systems that allow the team to support a growing customer base efficiently.
  • Create a culture that values intellectual rigor, customer responsiveness, practical judgment, and cross-functional collaboration.

Translate Legal and Risk Requirements Into Technical Systems

  • Translate legal obligations, regulatory guidance, internal policies, and risk requirements into concrete and testable standards.
  • Guide the development of evaluation techniques for generative and agentic AI systems, including multi-step agent behavior, tool use, decision-making, and sequence-dependent failure modes.
  • Apply requirements from sources such as the EU AI Act, state AI and privacy laws, EEOC guidance, sector-specific regulation, and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework.

Partner Across LuminosAI

  • Collaborate with product leadership to translate recurring customer needs into scalable platform capabilities.
  • Partner with sales and company leadership during customer evaluations, pilots, renewals, and strategic account discussions.
  • Contribute to LuminosAI’s broader thinking about the future of legal engineering and automated AI oversight.

Who You Are

  • You have at least five years of relevant professional experience in legal services, privacy, compliance, enterprise risk, AI governance, responsible AI, data science, enterprise software, or a related field.
  • You have significant experience working directly with customers or clients and taking responsibility for their ongoing needs and outcomes.
  • You can explain a complex technical finding to a general counsel and a legal requirement to a machine learning engineer.
  • You are comfortable working with data scientists and engineers and are willing to engage with the technical details of AI systems and evaluations.
  • You thrive in a growing company where responsibilities evolve and leaders are expected to move easily between strategy and execution.

Preferred Background

  • JD or equivalent legal training. Bar admission is welcome but not required.
  • Experience in privacy, data protection, regulatory compliance, enterprise risk, algorithmic fairness, responsible AI, cybersecurity, or data governance.
  • Experience managing enterprise accounts, strategic customers, professional-services engagements, or customer-success programs.
  • Experience working at a law firm, consulting, or professional-services company.
  • Familiarity with generative AI, agentic AI, model evaluation, red teaming, benchmarking, or AI assurance.
